The research is out there that it is not our genes, as was originally thought, but our environment that shapes who we are and what we achieve. This is amazing! Because it means that we are not ‘stuck’ with symptoms like anxiety, stress, helplessness. How many times have you heard people say ‘oh, you’re just like your mother’or ‘you’ve always been like that’ or just fill in your own phrase! As if it’s set in stone and you can’t change because you inherited it. It’s not. Our cells are affected by the environment we live in and that includes our internal environment.
So we can change the soundtrack that runs through our mind. We can change our expectations. If you think there’s nothing you can do you’re right. But if you think you can change things, then you’re right also.
Many of our beliefs came from our early years, before we were 9 years old. They may have been repeated often by adults, things like “You’re not the clever one in the family” or “You couldn’t do that!”. We grow up believing these things.
Think of common statements around money ‘Money can’t buy you happiness’, ‘Money is the root of all evil’, ‘Better to give than receive” for example. Why can’t we receive and give? Since when did they become exclusive? If statements like these resonate with you could it be your own self-beliefs that are holding your finances back?
But we can change them and it’s quite easy to do! Imagine if you had the tools to demolish that critical voice in your head and to deal with stuff as it comes up rather than losing sleep and energy over it.
All you need is an open mind and determination to want to change this and allow yourself to be the best possible version of you. What have you got to lose?
